IMF’s Leslie Lipschitz joins Investec Asset Management

Adding further depth to Investec Asset Management’s global investment team, the firm today announced the appointment of Leslie Lipschitz, former director of the IMF Institute, as visiting strategist. Based in Cape Town, Lipschitz will work closely with the fixed income and multi-asset teams in formulating their macroeconomic and thematic views.

In a career spanning almost 40 years at the IMF, Lipschitz held increasingly senior positions in three area departments (Asian and Pacific, African and European) and in the Policy Development and Review Department. He worked extensively in Asia, Africa and Europe and led numerous IMF missions. He participated in the Fund's work on surveillance over the major industrial countries, led programme negotiations for both emerging and developing countries, and was closely involved in the Fund's policy development work in surveillance and conditionality.

“We are delighted to welcome Leslie ‘home’ to South Africa and to Investec Asset Management. We are confident that the insights he gained from many years of engaging with policy makers around the world, some of whom represented countries in crisis, will add significant benefit to our clients’ portfolios,” said Hendrik du Toit, CEO of Investec Asset Management.

Lipschitz, a South African by birth and alumnus of the University of Cape Town, where he studied under Investec strategist Brian Kantor, commented on his new role: “Investec Asset Management is an impressive operation. It seems to combine careful analysis and wisdom with nimbleness and vigour: ideas and insights trump hierarchy, discussion and debate are welcomed, and the focus is solely on getting decisions right. I look forward to contributing to the work of this internationally regarded investment team.”

Lipschitz holds a PhD in economics from the University of London. He has been a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution and has taught at the School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University.
