On 1 November 2017, we hosted our 4th annual London Forum at Altitude 360, London. The event focused on the theme of capitalising on the long term, specifically focusing on the opportunities and challenges specific to the UK asset management industry.
The programme started by addressing Brexit in relation to the City of London’s future as a leading financial centre with a robust discussion between Sir Ivan Rogers KCMG, former UK Permanent Representative to the EU and Katharine Braddick, Director General, Financial Services at HM Treasury chaired by Hendrik du Toit, Chief Executive Officer of Investec Asset Management. Tina Fordham, Chief Global Political Analyst at Citi Research broadened the discussion with a review of current political risks around the world and possible impact on financial markets.
The first panel discussion addressed practical ways to re-orient investment portfolios to the long term. It featured contributions from Ian McKinlay, Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Lloyds Banking Group Pension Schemes, Mark Walker, Global CIO, Univest and Chris Ralph, CIO, St. James’s Place Wealth Management. The second panel expanded the long-term theme with a discussion on the evolution of ESG investing and how asset owners, managers and consultants can collaborate better to drive new innovation in this arena. Stuart White, Head of Strategy, HSBC Global Asset Management and Fiona Miller, Head Pensions & Financial Services, Cumbria County Council, Chief Operating Officer of the Borders to Coast Pensions Partnership shared their thoughts and practical examples of how they are integrating new ESG process and products into their respective organisations. Martin Ford, Author of “Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future” closed the event, with a view on the future, the rise of robotics, artificial intelligence and implications for investors.Return to Investment Institute
