On a humid August evening there was a sense of optimism in the air ahead for the eagerly anticipated Investec/Hymans cricket match with some scores to settle from last year. Hymans were strengthened with a couple of quality new additions and Investec likewise had some impressive first-timers drafted in for this all-star game.
Investec were provided the honour of opening the batting with Jeff Boswell and Ed Evers getting the team off to a steady start. As the runs started to gather steam the opening pair’s wickets fell to a slightly harsh LBW call and an excellent catch from Phil Spencer at square leg. With that the real Investec quality came to the wicket with Sophie Remnant, Rose Easton, Josephine LP, Shaza Hasan and Imogen Patton all showing the gents how it should be done. If it wasn’t for some impressive bowling from Nimisha Sodha, Emily Tann, Priyesh Bamania and Katy Panesar the female attack from Investec would have added a significant few more runs to their total. All 11 bowlers of Hymans turned in a good over or two restricting Investec to 99 runs.
Hymans opening pair of William Chan and Peter Downing really weren’t messing around, adding runs at a solid rate and being helped by some rather erratic bowling from Tom Peberdy and Atul Shinh. Upon retirement of Peter Downing reaching the mandatory 25 runs the middle order of Hymans continued apace with Nimisha Sodha, Paul Crocker and Nikhil Radia all providing impressive cameos. It was with no surprise that Hymans chased down the Investec total with 3 overs to spare earning them a much deserved victory.
This was one of the most enjoyable games of the seasons calendar with all 22 players having a bowl and bat. To see people making their debut on a cricket pitch, getting right in the thick of the action and enjoying themselves was a real complement to both teams.
Thank you to Nikhil and the team for an enjoyable evening. Until the next one…
