Investec vs. LCP
July 20th 2015

Result: Investec won by 1 wicket

Match report - photo gallery

The fourth game of Investec’s season, against LCP, turned out to provide the most exciting and closest finish of the season to date.

LCP won the toss and elected to bat and had a solid start against some tight bowling from Mike Proctor and Kevin Roberts. Matt Thomas was eventually caught behind which saw rookie Odhran Mulrooney to the crease. Under expert guidance from James Fermont a good partnership ensued before Dave Hearn bowled first Fermont and then Mulrooney after a handy partnership. Nick Cooney wasn’t able to add to the score before foolishly taking on a suicidal single to David Aird who rearranged the stumps to run him out. LCP’s innings then changed tempo with a number of big boundaries from Nick Muller and Marcus de Kock, before both of them retired having reached the mandatory 25. With the tail now exposed Stephen Small, Proctor and Hearn again helped themselves to some cheap wickets and the total of 127 was perhaps a few runs shy of what the big hitting middle order had earlier promised. A good bowling performance from Investec, particularly Hearn with 3 for 13 from his 3 overs.

Investec started to tackle the target in a cavalier fashion. LCP’s bowlers de Kock, Amit Ghosh and Sailesh Mistry seemed to be able to collect wickets at will as wicket after wicket was thrown away despite the efforts of Doyle to play an unusually sensible safety first innings. Proctor on 24, was seemingly the villain of the piece, swinging and missing at Porter whose straight ball re-arranged his stumps. With former man of the match Dixey’s first ball landing in the next post code for a huge 6 it looked as if Investec were back on track but he was sent back to the hutch after 3 balls, falling to an amazing juggling catch by Mulrooney in the deep.

With the big man gone, it seemed the match was now heading in LCP’s favour. Every chance was being taken by some inspired and athletic fielding. With 9 wickets down Ferrini strode out defiantly to join Roberts needing 47 more runs to win. Surely an impossible task even for a man of his skill. Despite a complete lack of faith from the watching crowd the final partnership of Roberts and Ferrini began to carve the LCP bowling to all parts of the ground. The target was being quickly reduced until in the penultimate over Ferrini took strike with the scores level and all LCP players surrounding the bat. With only one needed to win, Ferrini smote the ball to the boundary for an unlikely victory bringing up an unbroken 50 partnership. The crestfallen LCP fielders couldn’t believe they had let the match slip through their fingers, but their spirits were soon revived with an impeccable winning display in the post-match ‘boat race’.

Thanks to Tom Farrell for organising and until next year….
