On a glorious summers evening down at Shepherds Bush, Russell Investments were in determined spirits to swing the momentum after tasting defeat in the last two seasons.
Russell, awaiting the imminent arrival of a few key players opened the batting although sadly lost two early wickets with Vivek Sondhi and David Gregory falling to the deceptive pace of Stephen Small. The Russell ship soon steadied with Alex Smith providing a calm head in the middle to get the total ticking up. The short lived Alex Prowse was soon followed to the crease by Andy Chiguri (MOM) who offered an economical display with partner Smith. Once forced retirement was ordered to both batsmen the Investec bowlers came alive with Grant Cameron and Blake Musgrove both bowling well. A few sloppy wides from bowling debutants Tom Peberdy and Ethan Allen combined with the erratic keeping of Fred Dewhurst helped the Russell total continue to creep upwards. Alex Smith came back to the crease at the end of the innings to push the final Russell total to a very respectable but chase-able 147. Investec flew out of the blocks, hunting down the chase with focus and determination. Both Nigel Jacobs and Ethan Allen impressed with the bat racing to the mandatory 25 retirement in 14 and 17 balls respectively. All Investec needed was a solid middle order to keep the progress moving, sadly it ground to a halt. Debutant Elliot McIntyre and seasoned regular Dave Hearn confused the 20-20 match for the first day of a 5 day test match and added 7 runs between them in 38 balls! The impressive Andy Chiguri took his form with the bat into his bowling and bowled an exceptionally disciplined 4 over spell. A late surge from Stephen Small with the bat ran out of steam and the Investec chase whimpered to a close with 128 runs on the board.
The ultimate outcome was a deserved victory for Russell who have laid the ghost to rest of the last few years. They batted well and kept it tight with the ball, restricting Investec’s flair players from building any momentum. As the sun set over Shepherd’s Bush we were all able to reflect on another thoroughly enjoyable evening against our friends from Russell.
A special thanks to Guy, Joe and team. Until the next one…
