On 9 November 2017, the Investment Institute brought together several investment management professionals, ten years on since the global financial crisis, to debate the key learnings, challenges and opportunities that we now face as both market participants and members of society.

David Aird, Managing Director, UK Client Group, Investec Asset Management, began by outlining the current state of the investment landscape and how this is affecting investor appetite. It was then over to a panel of investment specialists to discuss practical ways to re-orient investment portfolios to the long term. Perhaps most notably the discussion around the implementation of long-horizon investing into equity and fixed income strategies and not solely in the private market domain. Panel: Matthew Ross, Senior Portfolio Manager, Univest; Aqib Hashamali, Investment Analyst, City Asset Management, Darpan Harar, Analyst, Multi-Asset, Investec Asset Management; Paul Vincent, Analyst, Quality, Investec Asset Management.

Duncan Coombe from Investec Asset Management then touched upon the concept of Secure Base Leadership as a method of unleashing potential. The theory is conceptualised upon the conditions under which human beings grow, learn and flourish and Duncan provided practical ideas aimed at bringing out the best in ourselves and others, including clients.

The significant steps being made to bring ESG integration into mainstream practices was the focus of the second panel discussion. Investor benefits, both financial and non-financial were outlined and the future ESG investment policies explored. Best practice in ESG integration across asset classes and the impacts on product innovation were also key talking points. Panel: Jamie Rosser, Investment Manager, RPMI Railpen; Hill Gaston, Investment Consultant, Mercer; Robin Bentele, Analyst, EMFI, Investec Asset Management; Graeme Baker, Assistant Portfolio Manager, Alternatives, Investec Asset Management; Eric Opara, Analyst Multi-Asset, Investec Asset Management.

The event was then concluded by Paddy Johnson, Hec Turner, Henry Quinlan and Max Mossman who provided the inspiration for the evening when they spoke about their attempt to pedal across the Atlantic to raise awareness about metal health in young men and women. This rounded of a highly thought-provoking evening and the discussion in the room provided a clear reflection of the developments that have been made but also captured the requirement for the continued development within society and not just professionally.
