The Center for International Development at Harvard University

As global investors who manage funds for clients from around the world, Investec Asset Management is committed to identifying and understanding the drivers of economic growth and competitiveness. To this end, the Institute is supporting new research being pioneered by the Center for International Development at Harvard University.

The Center’s ground-breaking research has identified Economic Complexity – and in particular the role and extent of productive knowledge – as a primary driver of economic growth. The theory and supporting empirical evidence explains why the accumulation of productive knowledge is the key to sustained economic growth. The theories help us understand which countries are best poised for economic growth, how countries can acquire and enhance their productive knowledge, and which industries and sectors are likely to appear or disappear over the long term in any given country.

In addition to its support for the underlying research, Investec Asset Management is also funding the development of The Atlas online, the website for the published The Atlas of Economic Complexity: Mapping Paths to Prosperity, an interactive tool that creates a visual narrative of the data. The insights from this research provide a new source of information for government policy making and for identifying long-term growth and investment prospects.

For more information on the research on Economic Complexity, download this briefing note or watch this video clip by Professor Ricardo Hausmann, the Director of the Center for International Development.
