The Investment Institute held a San Francisco event in April 2018 to facilitate discussion around China’s capital markets and the implications of this for institutional investors.

China, the second largest economy in the world by market capitalization, is on the verge of something truly extraordinary. Chinese equities offer one of the highest revenue, earnings and cashflow growth opportunities globally. There is major opportunity within sustainable and shareholder-friendly, consumer-orientated areas with high global growth rates for e-commerce, technology, consumer discretionary and healthcare.

There is no doubt that we are embarking on a new era in global markets, increasingly influenced by decisions made in Beijing. As China invests heavily in its new economy, internationalizes its currency and opens its domestic capital markets, meaningful investment opportunities are emerging for global investors. At the same time, concerns remain about navigating China’s authoritarian government, regulatory regime and corporate governance practices.

The event held in San Francisco was used as a tool to demonstrate the capabilities which are enabling Investec Asset Management to negotiate these investment opportunities in China. There is a dedicated and experienced team based in Hong Kong with Mandarin-speaking analysts and co-head of the 4Factor capability alongside Asian equity and fixed income trading desks. This Hong Kong office has been maintained for 20 years and has now built strong relationships with companies operating on the mainland.

Overall, this event provided confidence that Investec Asset Management are in a healthy position to take advantage of the current opportunity present in China and maintain the long-term investment offerings in the region.
