Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president, is in many ways worthy of our admiration. I know that any Brazilian reading this is now furiously spluttering into his/her coffee, but Rousseff spent her youth opposing the Brazilian military dictatorship, which ruled with an iron fist from 1964 until 1985. This dictatorship, particularly under President Costa e Silva and President Medici, tortured and murdered thousands of people. In 1970, Rousseff was arrested, jailed for three years and tortured through beatings and electric shocks. The fact that this indomitable woman not only recovered from this experience, but later became president of the country, a country which is infinitely more just and equitable than it was in the 1960s and 1970s, partly due to the efforts of many brave individuals, such as herself is an astounding tribute to her courage and strength…
