Welcome to our 2018 Global Insights Conference

It’s hard to believe that twelve months have passed since we were last in Bristol for Global Insights. As ever, 2017 was an eventful year for both markets and economies. Donald Trump was at the centre of the year’s geopolitical events and his Tweets filled the newswires on a daily basis. 2017 was also a year when, if you hadn’t already heard of the words cryptocurrency or Bitcoin then you certainly had done by the end of the year, as the latter’s value skyrocketed. Regulatory attention on the industry increased with MiFID II preparations and the publishing of the FCA’s Asset Management Market Study, and let’s not forget about Brexit negotiations which rumble on.

Looking to markets, outside of the UK, where ongoing Brexit uncertainties continue to weigh heavily on the future growth prospects of UK plc, the global economy appears to have achieved ‘escape velocity’ from the post Global Financial Crisis stagnation. Whether this proves enduring remains to be seen but for now, its momentum is extending one of the longest, if weakest, growth cycles since the 1920s. A cycle which continues to push many equity markets to new highs. However, with valuations now looking full or expensive in some assets, the question now is how much higher they can go in 2018, and how do we manage downside risks in this environment.

It’s against this backdrop that we re-assemble for our 3rd Global Insights Conference in Bristol. Over the course of the event we will share with you our investment insight and ideas across the asset classes, and because we know you are always looking for differentiated investment strategies, this year we are introducing a ‘New Investment Ideas’ section into the agenda. Here we’ll be highlighting a number of our newer strategies along with more established ones that you may not have heard of.

I hope you enjoy the conference and use it to interact with your peers and our investment experts.
